College life is critical to individuals. During this period, the level of mental health has strong impact on all aspects of college students.As a complicated system, as well as the foundation of persnality, self-concept has great influence on mental health. This article discusses self-concept and the mental health level of college students by considering the existing theories and related researches, and analyses the main features of self-concept and the mental health level of 512 college students, with assistance of TSCS (Tennessee Self-concept Scale), SCL-90 and SPSS 17.0 statistic software. According to correlation analysis, regression analysis and difference analysis, the results of research prove that:(1)There are significant differences in most aspects of self-concept in gender.(2)There are no significant differences in most aspects of self-concept between college students'majors in science and those major in arts.(3)The self-concept appears to be diverse significantly in different grades. Compared with the seniors, the juniors behave more passive.(4)Students who are only children and non-only children demonstrate obviously different in social self, family self and self-satisfaction.(5)There are great differences in self-concept between students from cities and those from the countryside. The students from the countryside behave more passive than those from cities.(6)There are significant differences between the students with good learning achievement and those with poor learning achievement in each dimension of self-concept.(7)There are significant differences between the colllege students and Chinese adults in most dimensions of SCL-90.(8)There is no significant difference in grades and majors about the scores of SCL-90, while there are significant differences in other aspects.(9)Students with high self-concept scores are significantly lower in SCL-90 than those with low self-concept.(10)Self-concept of college students negatively relates to the scores of SCL-90 in most dimensions except for self-criticism dimension.(11)Self-concept of college students has a significantly negtive predictive effect in the scores of SCL-90.The research conclusions of this paper have enriched the theory knowledge for self-concept and mental health of the college students. Meanwhile the results can be also used to improve the level of mental health, and provide some help to develop good self-concept.
