The purposes of the research were to explore the development of self-evaluation and self-esteem in college students, and analyze the relationship of self-evaluation, self-esteem and mental health.In the research, 324 students were selected from Year 2008 in one college. University Personality Inventory (UPI) was used to appraise students'mental health; the Self-Esteem Scale (SES) was used to appraise self-esteem; the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS) was used to appraise self-evaluation.The major findings were as follows:1. 20.37% percent of students had low-level mental health, ,and the percentage of medium- level mental health and high- level mental health were 32.41 and 47.22. On the whole, the girls had better mental health than boys, and liberal arts students had better mental health than science students.2. There was no significant difference in student's self-esteem in gender and in liberal arts and science.3. There was no significant difference in student's self-evaluation. In different dimensions, liberal arts students scored higher than science students in Behavior, Self Satisfaction, Personal Self, Social Self, Total Positive and Self Criticism; the difference was not significant in the other dimensions in liberal arts and science.4. The students on the low level of mental health scored significantly lower in self-esteem than students on the medium and high level, while the difference between the medium level and high level was not significant.5. In the dimension of Self Satisfaction, Behavior, Social Self and Total Positive, self-evaluation of students on different level of mental health was significantly different, but the differences were not significant in other dimensions.6. A correlation analysis showed that self-esteem positively correlated with Identity, Self Satisfaction, Moral-Ethical Self, Personal Self, Social Self and Total Positive, and negatively correlated with Self Criticism.
