As the summit and leading characters of Chinese landscape painting, the skills and creating principles of Four Artists of Yuan dynasty becomes the model of later artists. The study falls on five parts. The first part deals with the social, political and cultural backgrounds of landscape painting of the Four Artists (LPFAY) to clarify the origin of landscape painting. The second part explores the artistic characteristics of LPFAY through the inheriting of LPFAY. The third part addresses the breakthrough and innovations of LPFAY in respect to traditional landscape painting. The last part summarizes the experience of the copy of LPFAY. Actually, the study of LPFAY is the study of artistic laws. The old model of landscape painting can not adapt to new social and cultural changes and emotional changes of people in new era. Consequently, there must be changes in the skills and creating principles of landscape painting so as to adapt to the new changes in society and emotion. This is exactly the situation in which LPFAY comes into being, creating a unique excellence and beauty, and making the landscape painting the carries of spirit and the direction of landscape painting switching from realistic to liberal style, refining Chinese landscape painting to the height of artistic conception. The analysis of the art of LPFAY shows that the weakened realist factors and simplified painting procedure, the expression of the artists'emotion in the painting, the self-recreation function and the adornment of artistic conception is a whole organism, which influences and determines the cognition and copy of them. The learning of LPFAY is mainly the analysis of its artistic spirit and the copy of ink technique. The former is mainly concerning the hermit spirit, excellence and beauty as well as the image the picture represents. We should notice the unity of technique and images and should not separate and literally see the techniques and the spiritual contents. Therefore, the copy of LPFAY is not only about the super literal style but its spiritual level. Meanwhile, only set in the unique political and cultural background of Yuan dynasty can we really experience the necessity of the art's generation and its charm.
