‘Huanghan',a unique artistic conception found in ancient Chinese landscape painting,is often used to show the state of bleakness and coldness of nature,and further shows the feelings of men of letters who are lonely,aloof,indifferent,and carefree.Wangwei,the starter of Chinese landscape paining,is especially fond of painting snow.The desolation shown in his painting forms a style of his own,which attracts many of his followers trying to copy his style.Later generations reach a clear consensus about Wantwei's achievements,who later was regarded as the founder of landscape painting.Since then the concept of Huanghan was formed.The thesis is going to elaborate the characteristic of Huanghan in terms of desolate atmosphere shown in season and climate,deserted scenery,and paintings of bleak woods.Further,the thesis is to analyze the nature of Huanghan in terms of man of letters' temperament,biographical situation and appeal,imitation and succession.Also,the thesis will explore its profundity from the perspective of Confucianism,Buddhism,and Taoism.Then,by looking at the similarities and differences of conception of nature in ancient and modern times,and based on personal practice and experience,the thesis will discuss how the artistic conception of Huanghan is applied to contemporary social and nature environment.
