Heterographs refers to words which have several written forms. Because they are an excrescence of written language, unfavorable to the study and memory of people, it is an urge task of us to sort them out. On the sorting out of heterographs, the lingustic field has done a great deal of work and achieved much. But there are still some divergent opinions, which implies that the work of storting out has not yet completed, still need our further efforts. This essay makes some discussions on this subject from the angle of lexicology, emphasizes an approach of sorting out heterographs focusing on the lexical meaning. There are all together five chapters in this essay:The first chapter is the introduction, reviewing historically the study on the sorting out of heterographs, mainly summing up and analying the divergent opinions among the lingustic field upon this work, and pointing out problems needing to be settled. The second chapter expounds and proves the subject property of the sorting out of heterograph, from the aspects of the properties of the object of the study and the present situation of this subjects. We believes that the sorting out of heterographs should belong to the Chinese lexicology, and schould be studied under the instruction of lexicological theories. The third and fourth chapters concerns about the defining of heterographs. The former chapter mainly explores the decisive influence of lexical meaning on the defining of heterographs. It points out that, to define heterographs should pay much attention to the decisive influence of lexical meaning, avoid inflexibly judging them only according to the same sounds. Provided that the meaning of two words are exactly the same, and can be judged to be one word ,no matter whether they are different only in form or both in form and sound, they should beheterigraphs.the latter chapter discusses three problems:(l)The supplimentary influence of the motivation of words in defining heterographs.Basing upon the nature of heterograph, the essay raises that heterographs have the characteristic of possesing same motivation ,believees that this characteristic can affect the defining of heterograph supplimentarily . when a group of words are same in meaning ,but different in motivation, they can be excluded from the scope of heteroraph. (2)The essay considers that the "heterographs of cross relation"and "heterographs of inclusion relation "are not real heterographs.(3)Classify a special group of word -Ancient and modern Chinese words from heterographs .Ancient and modern Chinese words refers to the phenomena when a disyllabic word have developed new meaning which is adopted frequently, its form changes accordingly for the new meaning .This is similar to the Ancient and modern Chinese characters of graphetices, so this essay names it "Ancient and modern Chinese words".The fifth chapter studies the standarlization of heaterographs from the angle of lexicology. This essay holds that "clearness in meaning"should be the first principle of the standarlizaion of heterograph, and points out two problems should be concerned about in establishing the standard word form :(l)Be cautious to handle those word form including the Ancient and modern Chinese Characters. (2)Avoid the interference caused by th common meaning of certain morpheme in form in the correct understanding of meaning.
