Ping hua is the fourth largest Chinese dialect In Guangxi. According to its language features, Ping hua can be divided into two. the North Guangxi Dialect and the south Guangxi Dialect. The former has a relatively tidy type of phonetics while the phonetic type of the latter is heterogeneous, and what is more , it is spoken in a narrower scope. The dialect spoken in Xicun of the Chaoyang Town, which is the object of our investigation, belongs to the North Guangxi Dialeet. Located in the suburb of the Guilin city, Xicun is a place about 8 LI away from the center of the city, with a population of over 400, all of whom speak Pinghua . Based upon our on - the - spot investigation about the Xicun Dialect, we have made a relatively detailed description and an analysis about it, and then reflected the modes of combination of Initials and finals in the form of tables of Chinese Character phonetic symbol. With the sounds of ancient and medieval times as the reference, we have discussed respectively from the three aspects of initials, finals and tones the synchronic evolution of the Xicun Dialect and its correspondence to the Standard Chinese. We also have disclosed its interior structures and phonetic features, and then summarized its common phonetic features. There are in the Xicun Dialect 18 initials, 36 finals and 6 character tones. It has the following outstanding phonetic features (1 - 14 Hi}-).Like the other types of the North Guangxi Dialect, the Xicun Dialect has a heterogeneous type of phonetics. Each of Its sounds (including Initials, finals and tones} has been evoluted from several, or even more than ten ancient sounds (including initials , finals and tones). The initial which has absorbed the largest number of ancient initials in the Xicun Dialect is [ts]. It has absorbed 16 ancient character initials. The final that has absorbed the Largest number of ancient finals is [io]. It has absorbed 21 ancient character finals. The rising tone has absorbed the greatest number of ancient tones, with each of the four tones in modern standard Chinese pronunciation gathered in it.Another complicated phenomenon is the disintegration of the ancient initials, finals and tones In the Xicun Dialect. Almost each of its ancient initials, finals and tones has been disintegrated into several different modern Initials, finals and tones accordingly. The ancient initial"!^," has been disintegrated into 9 modern ones and is regarded as the one that has been changed most greatly. The ancient r"ina/"j?j=i'H?." is the final to which the most great change has taken place, with 7 modern finals produced out of it. The greatest change has taken place In the ancient rising tone, which has been disintegrated into 6 modern tones In the Xicun Dialect.Due to the special geographical Location of Xicun------Location very near the Guilincity, the Xicun Dialect has bean greatly Influenced by the Guilin Diolect. Furthermore, with the Influence of the standard Chinese, the pronunciations of a Large number of characters in the Xicun Dialect have become almost identical with the mandarin.Which Language family on earth does Pinghua belong to? This is still a disputable problem . In this thesis, however, on the basis of the analysis of the Xicun Dialect and of its comparison with the other types of Pinghua spoken in its neighborhood, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that the Xicun Dialect is characterized by the North Guangxi Dialect and is absolutely different from the south Guangxi Dialect. As we know, the North Guangxi Dialect is an independent dialect while the south Guangxi Dialect belongs to the Guangdong Dialect.
