Various Modes in The Story of West ChamberVarious Modes in The Story of West Chamber ,by Dong jie yuan in Jin dynasty (11 L5AD?1234AD), has been the most intactly preserved works of Variom Modes up to now and the overall creation in tunes combination, modes transformation, form variation marks the high level of maturity of talking ?and ?singing music in Song~and Yuan period.Nowadays the study on Various Modes in The Story of West Chamber in the music circle has found its most detailed description in A Manuscript of Ancient Chinese Music History by Yan Yinliu. Recently little attention has been paid to this subject and consequently there are almost no papers published. In this paper, the author thinks that there still exist some problems in Various Modes in The Story of West Chamber that need to be settled, such as the relationship between its modes and Yan Music modes in Tang and Song dynasties, the relationship between its music form and traditional music, the origin of its tunes, whether its tune combination has some principles and regularities, whether its tunes are associated with the Southern and Northern Music tune, how to evaluate the preseroed music in Various Modes in The Story of West Chamber from Tune.s of Southern and Northern Music. Using the research achievements of all learners for reference, this paper, on the basis of fully mastering the historical materials about Various Modes in The Story of West Chamber, analyses, induces and draws the developing process of various modes. Starting from this, it associates the relevent historical materials, analyses the tunes used in Various Modes in The Story of West Chamber, discerns the origin of its tunes and clearly sorts out the developing process of tune combination. It sums up the features of its music form.
