Nowadays, teaching English writing via the computer is one of the most popular interests in the field of writing pedagogy in China. This thesis consists of a summary of the experiments on computer-assisted teaching of English writing carried out in the English Department of the Capital Normal University. It aims at a systematic analysis of the advantages of this new teaching method in terms of providing an authentic, collaborative, and communicative writing environment for EFL students in China.This thesis is divided into five parts. Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the current background of the teaching and learning of English writing in the Chinese EFL classroom and defines several technical terms used in this study. Chapter Two provides a review of the existing published literature about the development of computer-assisted teaching and learning of English writing, and the reason of using computers in the teaching of writing. In addition, it summarizes the various ways to use the computer to teach English writing. Chapter Three details the procedures of the field study upon which this research is based. Moreover, this chapter contains detailed information about the method of the field study, as well as descriptions of the data collection and analysis procedures. In Chapter Four, the focus is on the findings from the field study, a description of the advantages and limitations of teaching and learning English in the computer-assisted classroom, taking into account both the students' and the teachers' perspectives. Furthermore, it provides a detailed discussion of two common viewpoints about the computer-assisted English writing. Finally, Chapter Five offers a conclusion of this research and recommends further implications for Chinese EFL writing teaching.
