Traditional Chinese water-and-ink painting and realistic painting are both distinctive results of Chinese culture. The requirement of their media underlie the differences between their forms and expressing methods. The traditional Chinese realistic painting shows vivid and lifelike images, which means it emphasizes on reappearance. The traditional Chinese water-and-ink painting trends to express special feelings and emotions, which means it stresses on indication. Both of them have their own particular painting procedures, expressing ways, humane connotation and value standards. As far as the two kinds of traditional kinds of Chinese painting are concerned, they would have been developing at the same speed and same level, but the truth is that: the traditional water-and ink painting has become the mainstream art form ever since its development in Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty and the following several hundred years. On the contrary, the traditional Chinese realistic painting has to be on a minor place ... The rise and fall of traditional Chinese water-and ink painting and realistic painting are related to complicated historical reasons. With the transformation from traditionalism to modernism and the formation of pluralistic pattern in 20th century, both of water-and ink painting and Chinese realistic painting will show their superiority and inferiority, which are believed to be complementary. The complementing relation has become the new start of the development of traditional Chinese painting. But now, very few persons have engaged in expounding their relation systematically and comprehensively. This article aims at discussing the complementary between traditional Chinese water-and ink painting and realistic from the context of modern times.
