Sicong Zhou is known as one of the most outstanding female painter in China during last century. Herpaintings show deep humanistic concern and unique feminist perspective, express her sincerest andsimplest voice from a different angle with painting techniques pursuing real and ordinary. Her dedication ofart and spirit of innovation and exploration are worth our learning. In the21st century, Chinese water andink portraits painting are still in the process of transforming from tradition to modernity. As for the questionof how to deal with the relationship between tradition and modernity and innovation and how to developwater and ink portraits painting nowadays, maybe we can get some enlightenments from Sicong Zhou.Being the successor of the great realist Beihong Xu and Zhaohe Jiang, Sicong Zhou carve outsomething new as well. She is a painter who experienced two different creation periods. Most of her earlyworks inherit the style of Zhaohe Jiang, express the truth of life with traditional pen and ink language.While the later works cut into the real life with modern painting language, integrate the western modern artwith traditional Chinese aesthetic culture. Based on the research of Sicong Zhou’s painting, this paper triesto analyze the characteristic and changes in the transformation process of Chinese water and ink portraitpainting from tradition to modernity.In present academic studies, Sicong Zhou is only briefly summarized instead of being placed in thetransformation and transition process of water and ink portraits painting. Based on the current situation ofacademic research, this study made intensive researches about Sicong Zhou’s art exploration process of art,figured out the characteristic in the water and ink portraits painting transformation. Considering thetransformation happens under the drastic change of social, cultural and other forms in recent one hundredyears, this study combines the cultural context and times background with the artist exploration andinterpretation of Sicong Zhou.
