Chapter one of the paper. The Theme of life and Existence in Fan Chengda's Poems deals mainly with Fan's life value, and his related life view, his mode of existence, and his pursuit of personal ideals. It is held that the keynote of Fan's life view lies in his idea of Confucianism as the base, the principles of Buddhism and the thoughts of Laozi as complement The latter plays an important part in maintaining independent personality and in relieving human misery. It also has an important influence on the forming of the gentle and elegant style in Fan's poems. It should not be blamed for being negative. Chapter Two treats of the subject and artistic feature of Fan's poetry. This part also makes an exposition in Fan's pomems that reflect the local condition and customs and those that depict the scenery and praise objects neglected by early researchers. It also sets forth the author's reflections on the drawbacks of repetition in the poems of Fan Chengda and other poets in Song Dynasty.
