This paper makes a comparative study of the quotaions of Shuo Wen in Li Shan抯 connotations and the extant Da Xu Version in terms of both content and form, and concludes the Characteristics of the quotations of Shuo Wen in Li Shan抯 connotations and analysez his contribution as well as errors. The importance and value lies in the following three aspects: Firstly, it provides the most fundamental and original material for the collation of Shuo Wen. Secondly, it is helpful to the researchers of the material in the quotations of other people. Finally, it helps to make a more complete investigation into the function, influence and value of Shuo Wen. This paper consists of four chapters: Chapter One serves as an introduction. This part tells about the purpose of the work, the recent research in this field and the method as well as the procedure of the composition. Chapter Two makes a comparison between the illustrated words in the quotations of Shuo Wen in Li Shan抯 connotations with those in the Da Xu Version. It mainly makes a differentiation between the two in terms of pictophonetic characters, and briefly analyses the illustrated disyllabic words in Li抯 connotations. Chapter Three makes a comparison of the explanation in Li抯 connotation and that in the Da Xu Version. It mainly compares the two in terms of both content and form in greater detail. Chapter Four analyses and evaluates the quotations of Shuo Wen in Li Shan抯 connotations and concludes their six characteristics and at last comments on them in terms of contribution and errors.
