As a trend of academic and research method, the comparative literature research receives more and more concern from all sides in Chinese academic community. This article is an application of the Research mainly dealing with the difference between Chinese and Western artistic theory and tracing down the causes of the difference. From an audio-visual point of view, the difference is first shown in the literary form. On the influence of the work of art (stress the expression), the writing styles conveying feelings have been well developed since the ancient time; Western literature on the contrary, on the influence of the 搕ype?theory (stress reappearance), its narrative prose have been well developed. Generally speaking, the difference is due to the difference of spirit of culture in Western culture. To be specific, the difference is due to the difference between the Chinese and Western mode of thinking which was chiefly demonstrated in the view of language (language and meaning). In other word the main reason that causes the Chinese and Western difference in the artistic theory is the difference lies in the view of language ie. the difference in their language and meaning. The Western rational of thinking decides their emphasis on the language too and worship to it, then the Logos Theory is formed which has influenced the Western countries for thousands of years and is called 揻eelings conveyer?in language. The Chinese perception of thinking decides that Chinese people do not emphasize the language tool, and after long time of suspicion and dispose to the language, appoint that language can抰 fully convey feelings is formed. The Chinese and Western difference in the view of language has close relation to their difference in language and mode of thinking. Purely thoughts without symbols are non-exist and symbols, esp. the language symbols are the reality of the thoughts; so the language difference creates various characters of thinking. The phonographic Western alphabetic language must depend on the language symbols (the combination of signifiant and signifie), that form a word to be meaningful; the ideographic Chinese language, however, directly reflects the concept of a specific form, the form (not rely on sound) can convey meanings and contain the cultural connotation and has a visual character from word form to word meaning. The word form and grammatical differences result in the difference in their mode of thinking, that is, the Chinese people who think by characters are good at perceptual thinking which is direct, experienced, intellectual and emphatic on the general expression; However the characteristic and mode of thinking of the western people who think by alphabetic language are the people are good at perceptual thinking which is scientific, logic, knowledgeable and its emphatic on the reappearance in detail. In the end the article points out that the cause of the difference in the Chinese and western artistic theory is rooted in their difference in their spoken and written language and in their mode of thinking. Meanwhile, it stresses that the development of Chinese artistic theory can gain powerful life only on the condition that it exchange with foreign theories, absorb from all sides and combine the ancient and today抯 theories.
