Scarcity is a basic problem in economics. All economics propositions have evolved from it. However, scarcity is also an important problem in painting history, because the human race faces the same contradiction between infinite lust and finite resources in painting consumption. This paper consists of following parts. Introduction gives an explanation of necessity of studying painting scarcity and puts forward the central problem. Chapter one analyses the social causes of Tang painting scarcity from the view point of continuous expansion of painting consumer population, constant swelling of painting consumer抯 lust and more varied consumer抯 behavior. Chapter two discusses the resources causes of Tang painting scarcity in the night of chaos caused by war, improper protection, painter scarcity and unequal distribution, etc. Chapter three goes further into different adjusted patterns as to Tang painting scarcity on the basis of closed production of The Court抯 painters, service production of artisan-painters, self-service production of literati, copying painting and market adjustment, etc. Conclusion restates the significance of the theory of Tang painting scarcity.
