On Lin Yutang's Early Essays By Contradiction Of Liberalistic Intellectuals

In the Chinese modern history of literature, Lin Yutang's cultural identity is more special. with multi social identities, ambiguous political stances and contradictory literature creations and literature attitudes, which makes him puzzling and amazing at the same time. As a liberalistic intellectual, his essays set perfect explanations on his transferring of his social identities and role consciousness, which also exert great impact on his expressions of his thoughts and employed literature forms. Lin Yutang's essays have already surpassed its significance in literature, art or aesthetic. His essays bear on the connotation of his age and his pondering over the historical occurrings.This thesis explores his essays through the keyword, social identity. Combining with the social cultural background and his liberalistic identity, our thesis endeavors to delve into the connections between the transferring of his social identities and his essays. On that, we attempt to savor his essays'literature spirits, which are the cultural connotations, such as humor, leisure and dispositions, and his literature expression of those connotations, and to uncover the historical value and age connotation of his essays.The thesis will detail the research in three parts. The first part is mainly on the social identity and role identification of Lin Yutang. During the May 4th enlightening movement period, his double identities are interwoven with each other. The identity dilemma provides the possibility of transferring from the climax time of Yu Si to Lun Yu. His transferring of social identities and essays'styles lies in his individual choice and age influences as well. In the second part, we will mainly observe the literature, culture perspective of his essays and dig into his literature thoughts and expressions. He receives the western education from his early years, which supply him with the chance to master the western and Chinese culture at will, with the western culture as the base and Chinese culture in his expressions. He thus proposes his humor, leisure and disposition literature theory and practices it in his own literature creations. In the third part, we will further discuss the artistic styles and implicit social cultural connotations from a conversational strategy perspective, which will be unfolded into three places, namely the politics of super politics, considerations over the left wings position and enlightening and also the recognition of the worldly life of ordinary citizen intellectuals.
