This thesis covers three essential problems relevant to verb exemplification in BLDs: 1) Major deficiencies in verb examples in Chinese BLDs, 2) Theoretical basis of verb exemplification, 3) Learner corpora used in verb exemplification. Upon the careful discussion of 3 major problems in verb examples in some mainstream Chinese BLDs. the paper suggests that verb exemplification should be theoretically based on valencv theory so that the typical syntactic features of verbs can be fully presented in examples. Implications of valency theory to verb exemplification are also discussed in details. The other research is the systematic study of learner's difficulties in EFL learning based on learner corpora. Lexicographers should analyze the errors in verbs collected from learner corpora. Three major kinds of typical errors in verbs are found in the analysis: errors in valency structures, errors in verb meaning and errors in verb tense. Based on this analysis, some exemplification methods, e.g. the "counter-example" are put forward to integrate the information on errors into examples. Lastly, a linguistic test is carried Out among EFL learners to prove the possible benefits of this kind of examples to learners'translation activities. Through the argumentation, this thesis concludes that it is quite important for lexicographers to make the verb exemplification based on valency theory and to make use of learner corpora in exemplification. BLDs will accord well with Chinese learners?characteristics in EFL learning if these two considerations become part of the planning of Chinese BLDs. This would surely bring great benefits to EFL learner's language learning.
