Wen Yiduo, a renowned scholar, famous poet, andcourageous fighter for democracy in Chinese modernhistory, has been much emphasized as a poet and afighter, while ignored as a scholar. The author ofthis thesis, therefore, intends to focus on hisachievements in the study of (SHIJING).The thesisis divided into five parts, with the first partintroducing his life story and the academic backgroundof his research. After Wen graduated from QinghuaUniversity, he went to the United States for furtherstudy, where he was enriched by many fresh ideas. During this period his ascetic thinking was mainlyreflected in his emphasis on the important role one? semotion play in artistic creation, which had a greatimpact on his study of the classical literature. Sincehe conducted his research on (SHIJLNG) mainly in thel93Os and 1940s, his research on ancient literature ischaracterized in content and methodology by the academic attitude of the age - with a liberated mind and-with the tradition disregarded. The second part explores the catalogue of his worksbased on the study of (SHIJING). On the ground of a variety of his anthologies, academic writings and the copies of his manuscripts kept in Beijing National Library, the author has in this part sorted out the catalogue of Wen' s research works. His works can be put into two kinds:those published during his lifetime, and those unpublished existing in the form of manuscripts. Many works, either published during his lifetime or the posthumous, have been embodied in the corpus published in 1993 by Hubei People' s Publishing House. The former are mostly unfinished or unfinalized written in his early life; the latter are mostly finalized on the basis of his manuscripts. For instance, the published Analysis of the Legends of Gaotang Goddess is based on the unpublished ; and the published is based on the earlier unpublished < SHIJINGTONGYI Yl>.The third part concerns what he has researched about in . This has two aspects. One is basic study, in which he uses phonology and philology means to give exegeses to phrases, such as , , < SHIXINTAIHONGZISHUO>. The newresearch method put forward in in one of his unpublished work serves as an outline for his research. The other is an analysis of the YILI of some of the poems in < SHIJING> in the perspective of pure literature with the emphasis on the images and life scenes depicted in the poems. Some explanations in light of culture are also served here. , can be taken as examples. The fourth part involves the academic method of his research. In accordance with the two aspects stated above, he uses two different methods. On the onehand, in verifying the phrasing of the poems he uses not only the traditional KAOJU but also has a comprehensive analysis of the same words in the same use in different sentences. While not being restricted by traditional ideas, he incorporates in his research many new theories of modern social sciences, such as folklore, theology, and cultural anthropology; hence arise many novel and unique conceptions. These new conceptions, in return, form the foundation of his analysis of the YILI of . The purpose for his doing so is to seek the true nature of , which is what he says about seeking the truth. One the other hand, in analyzing , he combines literature with cultural anthropology, presenting to the readers the life in the age of with poetic language, enabling us to experience the emotions, perceiving the images, and appreciate thebeauty contained in the poem. He does so for the purpose of what he says about seeking the beauty. His research, in fact, is a perfect combination of the pursuing of truth and beauty. The fifth part, the conclusion, points out that although it had become a commonsense to understand from the literary perspective in 1930s and 1940s,.4.many scholars had merely focused the tone, rhyme, cadenc...
