1870?920 is an important developing period of American city. During this period, the urbanization rate had been improved from 25.7% to 51.2%, at the same time, politics, culture and economy center moved from rural country to industrial urban. America transformed from rural agricultural society to urban industrial nation. Urban transformation that occurred in the United States had its own distinct characteristic. At first, it was the fast speed compared with west European countries. During this period, large city developed surpassing others. Social mobility and the arriving of immigrant played an important role in the development of American cities. The transformed pattern distinguished by districts. In the motive force of transformation, industrialization, modernization of agriculture, improvement of science and technology , increase of economy and innovation of transportation played a important role. Pushed by the urban transformation, American economy increased quickly, the structure of government had been improved , the basic of democracy enlarged, and education developed in all level. But it also brought forth some problems, such as slum, urban poverty, crime, corruption of government etc. The urban transformation of America can give us some experiences as well as lessons. The main experience is, the urban development must depend on the economic increase. Another important one is the pattern of urbanization must should vary by different conditions. Lessons are obvious, we ought to pay more attention to the protect of circumstances, let surban and inner city develop together and so on.
