The author of the presented thesis, from the point of view ofKaPlan's CR research on L2 writing with the readability as the mainpurpose, is intended to discuss the textual translation with the aim toillustrate the necessity of rhetorical transformation from the sourcelangUage to the target langUage in the process of translation to achievethe faithfulness to the original message, expressiveness and elegance tothe target langUage. ln order to demonstrate the reasonability andreliability of such a rhetorical transformation, this thesis, from theperspectives of philosophy of linguistics and linguistic ontology, probesinto the thought pattems of native English speakers and native Chinesepeople, describes the rhetorical pattems of English and ChineselangUages, and analyzes the dialectic relationship betWeen thoughtpattern and rhetorical patterns. In addition, the thesis presents thespecific techniques with regard to the transference of the contrastiverhetorical pattems. The author concludes that the natural translationbetWeen Chinese and English should take into account the Chinese andthe EngIish differences in the ways of thinking---the hidden cause for thedifferences in the Chinese and English rhetorical pattems. It is expectedthat this thesis will be not only beneficial to the translation practice, butalso quite helpful to the foreign language leamers and some translatorsas well. It can also be used for reference to evaluate the trapslated work.
