Strategies For Improving Readability Of English-Chinese Translation

With the deepening of international exchanges,the demand for English-Chinese translation from Chinese readers has been increasing.Through the evaluation of Chinese readers on the content and translation quality of the translated works,however,it can be found that the readability of most works is far from satisfactory.In this thesis,based on 365 English-Chinese book series translation project,the author discussed the strategies for improving readability of the English-Chinese translation on the basis of accurate conveyance of text information.This thesis begins with the characteristics of 365 book series translation project,followed by five requirements of readability regarding this project resulting from the different styles of source texts based on the definition of text readability,including using concise words,avoiding high register,avoiding lengthy clause,obeying Chinese clause order,and clarifying the expression of metaphor.The thesis then uses fifteen examples to illustrate five strategies for improving readability of the translation,namely using reasonably the four-character structure in Chinese,reducing word register,reducing clause length,adjusting clause order,and adding explanatory information for metaphors,collectively making the translation more smooth and easy to understand,more in line with the text context,and be more attractive to Chinese readers.It is hoped that this thesis will somewhat support translators in English-Chinese translation with increased translation quality and efficiency.
