On the basis of the 1990's China's documentary production, this thesis focuses on two eye-catching documentary practices, that is, 1990's nongovernmental production and the governmental production initiated by "Living Space". The thesis thus is divided into two parts, which respectively discuss several problems caused by the appearance of these two phenomena. It, therefore, opens a window for looking into the 1990's China's documentary films as well as its development in prospect. Chapter One Based on the introduction of 1990's nongovernmental documentary production personnel and its production situation, it points out the reason of its emergence, analyzes its development process and finally probes into its significance and deficiency in terms of the political, economical and cultural changes in the 1990's. Chapter Two Concerned with the study on the new ideology and marketing circumstances, it elaborates why "Living Space", which aims at "telling the stories of the common people", came into being in the 1990's and why it could become the synonym of 1990's China's documentary films. Finally it illuminates the significance and limitations of "Living Space" and even the 1990's China's culture, TV concept and the documentary films.
