A good knowledge about the stylistic features of written English news reporting (WENR) is of great importance to those who want to improve their English byreading English newspapers and magazines. This paper concentrates on the characteristics of WENR, based on the corpora CENR, CET4, BROWNA, LOBA, MEE, NEC and MTE. Quantitative data are generated by computer programs and modern statistical methods are employed to analyse and check the robustness of the results. It is concluded that WENR is significantly different from the other registers on all the levels and in some cases, there is significant diachronic changes within WENR. Instructional guidance is suggested at the end of the paper.
