Media discourse has received particular scrutiny in the study of critical discourse analysis (CDA). The motivating principle behind the analysis is to explore ideology in language, since in CD A, discourse is termed as 'language use'. Based on Halliday's Systemic-functional grammar and Fairclough's three-dimensional critical discourse analysis model, I have developed a theoretical framework for the analysis of news reports, a special text type of media discourse. An analysis of ten news reports of one event from different sources is carried out to exemplify and validate the framework I have proposed. The objectives of this study can be specified as follows: first, to critically review researches and theories available in the field of critical discourse analysis (CDA), a critical discourse analysis of news reports in particular; second, to develop a framework which helps to analyze aspects of ideology and social structure embedded in news reports through critical discourse analysis; third, to propose ways which aim to foster in English learners a critical language awareness of news reports so as to make readers or learners more aware of the investment of ideology and social structures encoded in such discourses. The result of critical analysis of news texts reveals that the framework I have proposed is applicable in the analysis of media discourse. The findings also suggest that from a pedagogical point of view there is an urgent need to develop a critical language awareness in English learners. |
