Xuxu, the representative author of the late part of Romanticism in the history of Modern Chinese Literature, produced a vast number of love novels in 50 years of his writing career. This thesis aims at inspecting the themes and development of Xuxu's love novels and its place in the history of Modern Chinese Literature. At the beginning of this thesis, it reviews the themes of the Xuxu's love novels, which have been divided into three points. The first is the relationship between love and space-time. Xuxu expresses a modern idea of love. He regards that love changes with the space-time and there is no eternal love in the world. His reflection on the traditional unswerving love is more thorough than any other writer during that time. The second is the relationship between love and sex. Xuxu is good at describing love from the angle of aesthetics. His love novels seldom touch upon sex, so they are pure. The third is the relationship between love and religion. He thinks love with the emotion of religion, which leads his love novels surpass the common love ideas. Then, the article analyses the development of Xuxu's love novels. Xuxu had become famous from the beginning of the 1930s to the emption of the Pacific War. He devoted himself to the pursuit of the ideal love and hoped to find a road to the eternal love and marriage. This period established the romantic keynote of his love novels. However, his creation of love novels was during the period of transition from the emption of the Pacific War to the period before Revolution. During this period of time, his works hesitated between the ideal and the reality. His love novels embodied pessimism except the idealism. From 1950 to 1980, Xuxu lived in HongKong, continued his writing, and gave birth to many good works. His thoughts of love and his artic techniques became more and more mature, while the idealism became dimmed in his novels. Finally idealism and pessimism are mingled and are more prone to pessimism. At the end of the thesis, the author puts an high premium on the historic place of Xuxu's love novels and concludes that it has an essence of containing elegance and popularity. In fact, Xuxu's love novels have overrun the popular literature in the common sense and approved by both the high and low classes in the society. Most important of all, it has premium effect and value in the history of Chinese Modern Literature.
