This dissertation illustrates the development of neo-realistic literature on the basis of socialism-realism as well as its limitations in the artistic space, the description of characters, the narrative attitudes and the expressive skills, based on the rise and change of the realistic literature in Europe, and the constant development and the essential nature of Chinese realistic new age literature. This dissertation holds that whether as a trend of thought or a style and a school of writing, the realistic novel has its essences. First of all, realistic literature can face reality and look at life in a positive way. Secondly, realistic literature can not only face reality but also transcend the reality, in which the characters participate in social reforms and promote their social development. Thirdly, realistic literature loves life, but it also criticizes the unreasonable phenomenon in the social life. Finally, realistic literature is free in its form of manifestation, artistic features and approaches. Most importantly, the dissertation puts forward that the neo-realism has three aesthetic essences. The first is its verisimilitude, that is, having the appearance of truth. The second is its commonplace and the third is that it pays much more attention to the living environment while it avoids the problems on one's ultimate, senses and values. The thesis maintains that the development of the neo-realism based on the socialism-realism is mainly manifested in its artistic space, its character description, its narrative attitudes and its expressive skills. In detail, first of all, it comes to focus on commonness of the lives of the common people. Secondly, it emphasizes the portrayal of the common people instead of "heroes". Thirdly, it emphasizes the objectivity and changes the form of novels to the form of stories. Fourthly, the neo-realism has absorbed some artistic skills of modernism. In summary, this dissertation presents that the neo-realistic literature has its own essential principles comparing with other literary schools. That is, it can face reality and dares to reveal the truth of life, meanwhile it doesn't make indiscreet criticisms, which is a breakthrough in modern literature and should be affirmed. On the other hand, neo-realistic literature also has its limitations and drawbacks. First of all, it ignores the romanticism in our lives and the writing lacks the artisticpassion and artistic appeal. Second, the neo-realistic novel emphasizes the lives of the common people, which leads to the commonplace of characters in aesthetic. However, since 1990s, it has changed a lot in the writing process in which the writers used to overcorrect the unreasonable phenomenon in real life but without their own constructive suggestions on how to make changes. Instead, the writers have changed psychologically from going against the tradition to the normal condition. In addition, they start to realize, describe and exceed forbidden zonesonce again-----the subject and the type of characters regarded as "traditional"before. These changes make it possible for the neo-realistic novel to reveal people and their lives more truthfully and comprehensively. Most importantly, these changes make Chinese literature in the 20th century and even in the new centurycome back to the literary proposition ------"For Life" quested for at the verybeginning.
