About Xi' an historical geography ,both former researchers and present scholars often regard Han, Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties as important periods and look up them as their research objects. Though some scholars ever researched certain problems, they tended to study in very general terms. Therefore, there are still many fundamental problems which have not been made clear from the end of Tang Dynasty to Ming Dynasty. By collecting related, information, summing up connected works and using the way of historical city geography ,this paper systematically expounds a number of points as to Xi' an urban geography in Wu' Dai, Song, Jin and Yuan Dynasties. By doing so, it is possible that this paper may make up for the gap in the research field of Xi' an urban geography and make the requirement to Xi' an city become more integrated than ever .Meanwhile, Xi' an city construction may benefit from the findings of this thesis.In this paper, there are seven parts. The first part is about the change to Xi' an status since the end of Tang Dynasty. On one hand, because of man -made effect and natural influence, Chang' an city has suffered from great destruction and it was not so prosperous as Tang Dynasty. However, during such period, Xi' an city's industry and commerce, military affairs and population develop to some degree, which prove that Xi' an city is still important in history. Second part is concerning to organizational system of Xi' an area under jurisdiction. In fact, Xi' an area under jurisdiction altered in some respects for different periods.The third part mainly introduces the structure of Xi' an city wall and the change to city gate. This part not only analyses Xi' an city scope and scale, but finds out the feature of Xi' an city wall. The fourth studies the evolution of Chang' an interior structure and different condition in each stage. This part includes some investigation on buildings, streets and population.The fifth content puts much emphasis on Long Shouqu' inlet channel and utilization. According to some information, Long Shouqu was built up mainly in Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty and was useful to people's living. The sixth is about StoneForest's establishment and renovation. This point chiefly studies such problems as establishment, position, structure and abolishing process.At last, this thesis also expounds the feature of An' xi Palace which lies in suburb of Chang' an city. The reason to research of this palace is that it is an important part of Xi' an urban geography.In brief, this paper includes macroscopic researches on Xi' an urban geography in Wu' dai, Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties. At the same time, there are microscopic studies about some conflicting problems by comparing many valuable works and papers.
