Speech act of gratitude is extremely common in our daily life. It is of significance to understand and command the speech act of gratitude. This paper attempts to relate research results of gratitude to Chinese language teaching from pragmatics perspectives. First, we make deep research on the speech act of gratitude in modern Chinese, include its definition, structure patters, strategies types and the effect of pragmatic factors. Pragmatic factors play different roles in different contexts, social distance has the best effect. Second, we investigate the speech act of gratitude of foreigners by questionnaire and compared with the applications of native Chinese. The date shows that the students are deficient in phrasing Chinese gratitude. It is therefore emphasized that structural language teaching alone is not sufficient in training students' communicative skills.
