At the beginning of the twentieth century, the development of modernity was the general trend of history in china. Wang Gower's liberal view on the theory of literary criticism arose mainly from his view on transcultural learning-梚n learning there is no difference of nationality. Wang Gower's conception that in learning there is no difference of age or nationality contributed to the formation of the features of Wang Gower's literary criticism, which are universality and humanity. Wang's conception also reflects China's liberal thinking in regard to literary criticism and reflects the vanguard role of Wang Gower's literary criticism.Out of humane concern for literary criticism, Wang Gower put forward the personality theory for literary criticism, which requires critics to have a free and independent moral character and keep aloof from desire for benefit in the activities of literary criticism. This theory will impel writers and critics to uphold the truth firmly, and help to create great artists and critics. On the whole, Wang Gower's academic achievements in literary criticism have the features of literary criticism as a discipline. In his about twenty research papers and some academic works, he expatiated the essence of literature and literary criticism again and again, put forward a series of basic notions on literary criticism, and use interdisciplinary and transcutural methods in the activities of literary criticism. Although he is still some distance away from setting up a complete discipline of literary criticism, a discipline of Chinese modern literary criticism, with his theories as the frame, is taking shape. In the context of world culture, we should draw on Wang Gower's successful experience in literary criticism in the construction of China's modern literary criticism. We should also sum up China's experience in literary criticism so as to improve the vitality of China's literary criticism and, in the world trend of literary criticism, voice the view of us Chinese.
