Hong Shen is the main founder of Chinese modern drama, while Eugene O'Neill is the outstanding dramatist in the world. Their relations started to be noticed since the appearance of YAMA ZHAO. This paper attempts to discuss their bearings based on the influence of O'Neill on Hong Shen, adopting the methods of Influence Study and Parallel Study. In my opinion, their theories and works take on the similarity in creation and inheritance of traditions, which is the result of both the influence and the independent development of individual consciousness. By analysing the phenomenon and reasons mentioned above, we can find that Hong Shen absorbed the creative spirits and skills of Expressionism from the West, especially from O'Neill, to bring forth new ideas in his early stage. But in later stage Hong Shen gradually broke away from the influence of the West. In addition, he strove to pursue more new ideas from traditional opera. This kind of relationship between them embodies the following basic rule in the development of Chinese modern drama: a process from accepting the influence of the West and imitating the western drama to shaking off the influence and being more creative based on traditional opera.
