Recent years have saw an increasing interest on semantics in a variety of disciplines. Semantics has become a hot spot that attracted the focuses of many linguistics schools and theories. It is also observed that there has appeared a crucial trend in linguistic research, that is, the semantic transformation. So, it is claimed that semantic perspective has become one of the most elementary problems in the research of language. The importance of semantics in current Chinese grammar has become more and more prominent as well, evidences have indicated that the research on modern Chinese grammar is undergoing a semantic transformation. As the witnesses and participants of this tide of transformation, it is necessary for us to clearly realize and scientifically evaluate this semantic transformation in modern Chinese from a historical and theoretical view. This dissertation attempts to trail the history of this semantic transformation and to evaluate its position and status in the research of modern Chinese grammar. In addition, the author also revealed the representations and reasons of this semantic transformation. The questions that whether the semantic transformation is simply a regression to traditional grammar and that what are the connections and differences between these two are also within our range of discussion. Last but not least, the author also elucidated the relationship between the semantic transformation and the combination between semantics and syntax.
