Theoretically based on the Chinese ancient poetic language concept and the western linguistic poetics of the 20th century ,this paper analyzes the language concept evolution of Chinese poems in the 20th century in consideration of the essential interrelationship of the existence of the language and the mankind. It holds that the change of the linguistic form of the Chinese poems in the 20th century from the writings in classical Chinese to the writings in the vernacular ,and the later constant adjustment within the system of the writings in the vernacular prove to be the language concept evolution on a deep level, that is to say the tense confrontation and the frequent change of the discourse of the individual and discourse of the masses in different periods. In view of the viewpoints about the language itself, discrepancy of the readers'expectation and the poets'different acknowledgement of their identities, the fomer manifests the ontological tendency of language ,the latter, the instrumental tendency of language. This state of affairs not only leads to the unsteadiness of the development of the Chinese poems in the 20th century, but also displays the spiritual predicament faced by the Chinese people in the process of seeking modernization,in other words, the hesitation and the irresolution in the chosing of the individual value and the group value. The language concept evolution of Chinese poems in the 20th century brought us the following enlightenments :not only being stick to the cultural critical stand of poems but also maintaining their independent character as art refer to find a balance point between the self reference and the external reference of language which enables poems to take shape;to make poems enter into a new productive context of meaning by way of displaying the meaning of itself and transcending it concurrently, and further to involve themselves in the imaginary construction of the world.
