The subconscious theory came into being since the end of 19th century with the development of capitalistic monopoly, expansionism & plural clash in the field of social culture. It was an irrefutable fact that the subconscious theory had great effect on the thought of western modern aesthetics & the literary & artistic creation, and subsequently affected every field of social culture.The subconscious theory got into the field of modern art education with its enormous impetus. This paper aims at revaluing the reformation & development of modem Chinese art education at the turn of this century through the subconscious theory. First, it introduces the basic theory of the subconscious & inquires into the concept of instinct, sublimate, prototype & intuition. And the most important aspect is that the close relationship between the subconscious & modern art education can be clarified by analyzing the subconscious & art creation, the subconscious & art education. Second, it criticizes & analyzes the inadequateness in our modem art education according to some statistics of present education situation in Gansu & Ningxia province, and puts forward nine limitations: l.the ignorance of the subconscious theory, 2.we ignore the development of sound intelligence of students, 3.we pay less attention to cultivating interest, 4.the contents of art are not developed well, S.the teaching method is unitary, 6.we cannot overcome the limitation of the conscious, T.lack of free & lively teaching atmosphere, S.the evaluation standard is backward, 9.the teacher's quality is not good enough to teach students. Finally, in view of these above problem, I want to put forward some suggestions: l.to accept the existence of the subconscious, 2.to build up tree & lively teaching surroundings, 3.to arouse the passion & interest for creation, 4.to adopt the teaching method of enlightenment, 5.to seek gifted students with high art potentiality, 6.to select many modern art works, 7.to make students grasp some techniques of modern art, 8.to pay attention to the function of imperceptible influence, 9.to attach importance to stimulating inspiration & the use of intuition, lO.to develop the value of art education & its unique function. Furthermore, this paper also illustrates some disadvantages that relationship between the subconscious & the conscious.We can get the clear & deep understanding of the close relationship between the subconscious & modern art education through careful exposition. And the subconscious theory can help us deeply understand the post-modernism art education & know the present situation of modern art education & its disadvantages, and especially exerts a profound influence on our art education & the improvement of curriculum.
