The world exists in the human mind of consciousness is called the Tip of Iceberg, and the underlyingexistence we can perceive and sense is bottomless, such as the bottom of iceberg in the sea, where you can’tunderstand the huge subconscious world of all fields. This world was discovered by Sigmund Freud (1856~1939, Austria) first, and this concept had asignificant impact on the domain of Psychology and Arts.Carl Gustav Jung (1875~1961, Switzerland) had been influenced by Freud (Note: Sigmund Freud) alot. However, Jung (Note: Carl Gustav Jung) developed the psychoanalytic theory called AnalyticalPsychology independently after he bid farewell to Freud. He found not only the negative level ofunconsciousness, but also its creative level. In addition, he considered that unconsciousness contains theindividual unconsciousness, and also the collective unconsciousness which is in a deeper, more general andprimitive level. The various archetypes existing in the collective unconsciousness are often rendered by image. Jungconsidered that the individuality can be achieved by the conscientization of the various archetypes, and thenpromotes self-realization.Jung advised to draw mandala as a way to achieve personalization, he believed that we could use visualpaintings to depict and analyze the invisible unconsciousness in order to achieve the conscientization. This article treats the paintings of Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010, France) as the symbolism reflectingthe individual’s unconsciousness, which is the personal mandala. What’ more, the article analyze thepersonal mandala from Analytical Psychology.Understanding Louise Bourgeois’s works is difficult unless we understand her life which is full ofautobiographical and self-confessional color. The incest between her governess and her father with hermother’s abnormal acquiescence, her cranky younger sister, as well as the elder sister’s disorderly sex, allthese things and people in her childhood brought Louise Bourgeois spiritual scars. However, in so extremelypoor family environment, there is no attempt to change anything but bring her a suitable mask to deal withthe specific circumstances. She always repressed in mind for the unreasonable phenomenon. The resultingshadow became her life’s issues which needed to be addressed all her life. These issues also were revealedher various works and paintings. As Rene huyghe (1906~, France) said, painting is the most direct andspontaneous behavior in all the creative activities of the artist. View of the above, this paper considers thatto study the subconscious level of human mind, Bourgeois’s painting is the best study object. We can divide Bourgeois’s paintings into three stages: the adulthood, the middle age and the old age.We analyze that how she formed her personalization or how to achieve the integration with the three stages. The adulthood paintings mainly showed the pattern of self-exploration, and the formation of Masksand Shadows. The middle age paintings formed the understanding of Shadow and Animus. Jung believes aperson’s midlife is concerned most widely in his career, because he believed a man tended to turn theoutside energy into internal energy in his middle age. Therefore, it is difficult to realize the subconsciousprototype until middle age.Analyzing bourgeois’s middle-aged paintings, we can find a new conversion, and we can understandthe internal subconscious prototype gradually after accepting the conversion. The old age paintings expressed the infinite love for his family, including the reconciliation andforgiveness to her father. The entire morphology of paintings became more specific, and each individualizedprototype was refined, the consciousness and unconsciousness were combined organically, all these condition made bourgeois’s paintings very close to self-realization.Through the analysis, we know that the cognition to the prototype such as Shadow and Animus, personalization don’t come into being sequentially on a straight line, but animus and shadow are therecurring problem. One of the reasons is that the unconsciousness need to be equilibrated afterdifferentiation and integration, and form a balance by a personalized process, and then repeated the processof integration and differentiation once again, in order to realize the full spirit at last. The other reason is thatthe information contacting with the society crowded into the consciousness continuously, the unacceptableor unnecessary portion of which was sent to the unconsciousness, which will form a new shadow, that’s whythe shadow problem repeated again and again in the lifetime. Thus, we analyze Louise Bourgeois’s unconscious theory through her personal life and artisticactivities. The unconsciousness not only includes the personal unconsciousness but also includes thecollective unconscious level potentially existing in common human prototypes. Therefore, although thearticle is the limiting analysis and study to an artist’s paintings, I hope it will be helpful to the understandingof common prototype of all human beings beyond the race and country. With this study, I not only have a deeper understanding to the subconscious world, but also understandthe unconscious symbolism appearing in my artistic works more carefully. I will not just stay in this article, but continue to combine the theory study with my artistic creation.
