The world is nowadays indeed stepping into integration. This shows people that no country and nation can exist while isolated from the rest of the world. Decision makers of all countries must circumspectly take into account mutual cognition and mutual understanding to plan policies. Under the circumstances,it has realistic significance to strengthen studying up on past mankind communications in political,economic and cultural fields.Taking note of that the 19th century was an important transitional period for both China and Siam,this thesis,employing sciences such as Market Economics,Institutional Economics,Comparative History and the views of the world as a whole and using the methods of comparative analysis and case study,researches the 19th century Sino-Siam maritime nongovernmental trade. Sino-Siam maritime nongovernmental trade operated round the market supply and demand. It normally processed due to the combination of interrelated elements such as merchants,capital and transactions. It should be observed that the 19th century Sino-Siam maritime nongovernmental trade retained many traditional features which were showed out in commercial capital management,commodity composition,trade settlement and trade concepts. In that transitional period,the trade was not static and undeviating because phase trait was evident especially in respects of the status of the trade,capital management and range,etc. Besides,as an economic activity,the 19th century Sino-Siam maritime nongovernmental trade was influenced by other factors among which the orientation of government policies engendered impacts on the scale and trend of the trade. The then governmental behaviors,especially the Qing Dynasty governmental behaviors,limited the trade in a very narrow scope and restrained the trade on a small scale and underdeveloped. Meanwhile,the world as a whole developed faster.Two Industrial Revolutions of the West and the tiding wave of colonization deeply affected Asia including China and Siam,and injected something new into Sino-Siam maritime nongovernmental trade. However,the substantial contents of the trade hadn't radically changed. Nongovernmental trade in sense of modern times didn't emerge yet but was in embryo.
