Interlanguage pragmatics is a relatively new area in the field of second language acquisition. The discussion of the thesis is restricted to a narrow sense of interlanguage pragmatics-the performance and acquisition of speech acts by L2 learners. To begin with the topic,we make the description upon pragmatics and interlanguage both in chapterl and chapter2 to give a clear realization in mind theoretically. It is believed that a central part of understanding the field of interlanguage pragmatics is gained through empirical investigation of interlanguage data. In chapters,we focus on six typical speech acts (greetings, refusals, apologies, requests, compliments and compliment responses) produced by Chinese learners of English. Some of the main findings regarding these aspects are reported. Although the data presented in this thesis represent only a fragment of the interlanguage pragmatics, they vividly illustrate some of the pragmatic features of Chinese English learners' speaking competence. In the final part of this thesis,I present implications gained from this study, which mainly concern four aspects of second language teaching. It is my hope that these implications will be of some help to language teaching practice.
