A bilingUal dictionary is related to translation by nature, and hence the quality oftranslation has a crucial influence on that of the BD proper.lt is a disaPpointing fact that, howevef, there lack attemPts on the ontology andcorresponding methodology as regards the translation of examPles in BD. Moreover, some traditional views, such as "examPle translation is similar to literary translation",are easy to mislead users due to their weaAness in theoretical and motivational base. The thesis intends to seek a theoretical and syStematic account of these issues. To start with, the stUdy makes a distinction between examPle and generaltranslation. It argues that, comPared with general teXts, examPle texts mainly holdthree idiosgucrasies, systendc fethee, inadequacy in context and as LSP Hence, adistinctive featllre Stands oul in terms of examPle translation, that is, aiming atachieving equivalence of examPle ftmctions. Accordingly, three ontologicalprinciples are proposed on this regard. They area. To hold meaning potential of the headword;b. To maintain the original structural pattern;c. To conform the style to the whole dictionary text. For this end, the thesis decides on MTT as its theoretical framework, and arguesthat the theory is so adequate that it can deal with example translation in BDtheoretically On the basis of the theoretical stUdies, the thesis aims subsequently atconStructing a model for examPle translation. The lexicalization model prOPosed byPolgU6re, A. based on MTT has been chosen as a mother model, which accounts forhow lexical units are selected and introduced in lingUistic utterances during languagegeneration, and presellts the advantage of integrating in a unified model all mainmpes of lexicon-related choices that are involved in langUage generation. Thisconforms to the nature and organism of translation. On these grounds, the study proposes a manipulation model fOr examPlellli?)translation in BD, which consists of three stages:Stage l: literal translation of the headword,Stage 2: collocation around the headword;Stage 3' semantic translation of the whole examPle.Afler an emPirical aPPlication, the thesis ends with some imPlications, limitations of the stUdy, and some suggestions for further research.
