A Study Of Translation In E-C Dictionary From The Perspective Of Dynamic Equivalence

Bilingual lexicography and translation are two different disciplines. The fact that both of them work with two languages implies the possibility that they can benefit each other. Many scholars have conducted thorough research about translation in English-Chinese dictionary from the lexicographic perspective. The present thesis tries to approach it from the alternative discipline—translation.First, Nida's dynamic equivalence theory is introduced in detail, which provides a theoretical support for the whole research. Then the features of the particular practice, translation in E-C dictionary are explored. Specifically speaking, there are two units to be translated. The first one is the headwords. To translate them, lexicographers are often faced with various anisomorphisms. The other object is the example after the headwords. Sometimes it is difficult to make its translation keep the original functions and sound natural at the same time. With the four principles derived from dynamic equivalence serving as the guidance, the above problems can be solved with different translation strategies. Based on this analysis, the thesis draws the conclusion that dynamic equivalence, though originally a translation theory, can be applied to bilingual lexicography.
