The Application Of Sino-Japanese Traditional Music In Jiang Wenye's Piano Music

Jiang Wenye is an exceptional musician in the modern and contemporary music history of China. His whole life's creation is closely connected with his unusual life experience: birth in Taiwan, growing up in mainland China and returning to it when making a name in Japan and thus abandoning a bright future. He incessantly composed music even during the War of Resistance against Japan, China's War of Liberation, the Anti-Rightist Struggle and the Great Cultural Revolution. His music reflects his optimistic, plain life attitude and strong national style and flavor. In his life fluctuation, he produced over 100 compositions, including orchestral, pianistic, chamber music, and dance drama. He is a prolific composer and a diligent music educator. Pianistic music started off and ran through his composition career, and it is an important part of his creation.This thesis studies, from a perspective of traditional music, the nationalization style in Jiang's pianistic creation by the application of such methods as survey, interview and documentation. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part briefly introduces Jiang's life experience and his works, furnishing the second part with background information. The second part studies Jiang's compositions. The first section makes a comprehensive exposition of his works, which are divided into three periods, the early life, the transitional period and the later life. In the second section, Jiang's pianistic creation is discussed in a perspective of traditional musical elements of Japan, Taiwan and mainland China, to look into the interrelation between his compositions and the traditional music and the times, to find out the formation and features of the national style of his creation, in the hope of making some contributions to the studies on Jiang Wenye.
