Guo Zurong is a renowned composer and educator in China. His musical works include over two hundred pieces of art songs, choral songs, chamber music, instrumentals, symphonies and orchestral music, which describe the beauty of nature, reveal his positive outlook toward life and expresse his concern for the society and the country. Due to historical reasons, his works were seldom published or performed over the past decades. Starting from the year of 1946, Guo Zurong's music composition went through the War of Liberation, the founding of the P.R of China, the Anti-Rightist Struggle, the Cultural Revolution and the period of reform and opening up. His musical works cover an extensive areas of symphony, chamber music, songs and pianistic music, and most of them combine modern factors with local colors and nationalization styles, with the pianistic music being an important part of his composition.This thesis studies the application of Fujian local folk music element in Guo Zurong's pianistic music composition by such methods as survey, interview, comparison, analysis and deduction. This paper is divided into two parts. The first section of the first part is a brief biography of Guo Zurong. The second section introduces his works by the following three categories: vocal music, chamber music and symphony and orchestral music, furnishing the second partwith background information. The second part studies Guo's pianistic music composition. The first secton makes a comprehensive exposition of his works. In the second section, Guo's pianistic music composition is discussed in detail in the perspective of folk songs, traditional opera and other Fujian local folk music elements, looking into the interrelation between his composition and Fujian local folk music elements, trying to find out the formation and features of the nationalization style of his pianistic music composition.
