| This thesis attempts to construct a CCF (Communicability-oriented and Cognition-based Foreignization) paradigm in terms of the reader's response for the purpose of culture conveyance as well as intention conveyance of the ST (Source Text) based on RT (Relevance Theory) and schema theory. It aims at providing a paradigm a translator can take as reference on how toforeignize and when and where to foreignize or domesticate as is universally held.Nowadays, there is a trend of culture convergence with the world globalization. China rich in its traditional culture and values, it is, practically, of significance to apply foreignization in translation, especially CE (Chinese to English) translation, to convey and retain culture. Due to the communicative nature of translation, foreignizing translation should take the reader's response into consideration. The communicative approach to translation study in which the TT (Target Text) reader's response is concerned, to a certain extent, turns out to be of domestication. Little has been done to perceive foreignization from a cognitive point of view in terms of the reader's response. Venuti's foreignizing translation has a great impact upon foreignization studies in the west, however, it fails to consider the communicative nature of translation. There is no unanimous theory of foreignization and domestication in China but a comparatively universal view to take the former as primary while the latter supplementary. Besides, despite numerous researches into foreignization and domestication, so far, translation theorists have limited their attention to arguing the conflict between them and the justifications for either within the scope of regarding them as no more than two opposite translating strategies. Hence little has been done to explore foreignization inward: as a translating strategy itself, foreignization may assume some practical model or paradigm guiding a translator how to foreignize.RT provides an ostensive-inferential communication by answering two questions: what is meant to be communicated and how is communication achieved. Under its reference frame, what is meant to be communicated is the communicator's informative intention and communication process is the communicator provides ostensive stimuli of his intention while the audience seeks the optimally relevant inference. Given that translation is a communicativebehavior between the ST author and the TT reader, then as a psycho-cognitive behavior, the TT reader's response could be examined in order to find its dynamic psycho-cognitive nature in the TT processing. Therefore, RT provides the theoretical base of analysis and criteria for the communicability of foreignization.Chapter 1 is the introductory part that involves the academic background, the purpose and the overview of the study. Chapter 2 takes a historical review to the studies on domestication and foreignization and figures out the limitations; then it clears the notion of foreignization in favor of culture conveyance function and communicative nature of translation and hypothetically constructs the CCF paradigm. Chapter 3 presents a frame of reference that mainly stems from RT and schema theory in discourse analysis. Having established the insufficiency of current studies on foreignization and decided the frame of reference, Chapter 4 endeavors to explore the psycho-cognitive nature of the TT readers in the TT processing for the theoretical construction of the CCF paradigm. The analysis involves the dynamics of reader's cognitive context in inferring the ST author's informative intention; the reader's schema structure in cognitive context and his schema refreshment with reference to recent findings in the nature of the interplay between the text and the reader's mind in text processing in the light of RT and schema theory.
