On The Principle Of Reestablishing Chinese Translation Theory

Through the analysis of the feature of the existing Chinese translation theory, the author points out that Chinese translation theory embodies many paradoxes and limitations, and that the basic reason for these is that it incorrectly views the role of language in translation activity. Thus, in order to reestablish Chinese translation theory, it is a necessity to correctly view language, which is shown from the angle of Hermeneutics in this thesis. On the other hand, according to the author, in order to reestablish Chinese translation theory, it is essential to learn from Western translation theory. And this point is proved from two aspects-the reason why should Western translation theory be learned from and how to learn from it. In this part, three kinds of Western translation theories are introduced-Even-Zohar's, Campos' and Vevuti's translation theories. Thus, the conclusion is drawn that the principle to reestablish Chinese translation theory is to improve the international position of Chinese culture and to resist cultural hegemony. Then, the author proves this conclusion by employing it to the problem about receptor's response and its consequent translation strategy: foreignization and domestication.
