Under the background of globalization, intercultural exchanges between China and foreign countries are conducted in a more frequent fashion.Along with the rapid development of Chinese culture “going out” strategy,it has a tendency to disseminate Chinese culture externally. As an indispensable window to display culture,Chinese museum has gradually become an essential platform for foreign tourists to understand Chinese culture.Chinese cultural relic contains abundant historical and cultural connotations, which is a carrier of Chinese culture. Therefore, the English version of cultural relics commentaries is an indispensable channel to disseminate Chinese culture. The translation quality of the cultural relics commentaries has a crucial impact on the image of the museum and the dissemination of Chinese culture, which merits attention in this field.Nevertheless, the English version of Chinese cultural relics commentaries provided by Chinese museums are not satisfactory.Compared with the British and American museums, there is a big difference, which affects the acceptability of the translation and restricts the external communication of Chinese culture. Therefore, further research is urgently needed.Whereas Chinese academic studies on the translation of cultural relics commentaries in Chinese museums are relatively later than western countries,so domestic research outcomes are not abundant. In current research,it mainly focuses on the translation of cultural relics commentaries from the perspective of linguistic and cultural comparison. However, the importance of target audience is not emphasized. Therefore, this thesis attempts to adopt Eugene Nida's receptor's response theory as the theoretical framework, taking Chinese cultural relics commentaries from national first-class comprehensive museums in China and official websites as the research objects, taking English commentary texts of Chinese cultural relics from famous comprehensive museums in English-speaking countries as reference. In this thesis, comparative analysis method and questionnaire survey are adopted to improve the intelligibility of the translation of Chinese cultural relics commentaries and meet the needs of foreign readers. The analysis suggests that the translator not only focuses on the linguistic norms of the target language, but also fully considers the capacity and requirements of the target readers in translating,to enhance the intelligibility and acceptability of the translation and promote the dissemination of Chinese culture. The study finds that Chinese and foreign cultural relics commentaries are distinct in language expression, textual content and textual structure by using comparative analysis methods. In this thesis,60 questionnaires are collected to test the responses of the target readers. It finds that the satisfaction of target readers on the C-E translation of Chinese cultural relics commentaries is still to be advanced.Under the guidance of the receptor's response theory, four translation methods, namely, liberal translation, imitation, adaptation and idiomatic translation method, are proposed to enhance the acceptability of the translated text and satisfaction of foreign readers. This thesis is conducive to enrich the research perspective on the translation of Chinese cultural relics commentaries in museums. It also has a practical reference value for C-E translation of publicity material.
