Recent years are witnessing the heated culture-related translation studies due tothe occurrence of culture turn in the1970s. Cultural exchanges among nations andareas, accordingly, become more frequent, thus making the trend of integrationirresistible. In the course of cultural communication and integration, translation’sfunction of bridging the mutual connection and promoting the cultural exchange isprominently observed. It is admitted that culture, translation and language are tightlyconnected. Given the inextricable relatedness among culture, translation and language,the introduction of Chinese profound and colorful customs and language patterns tothe outside world by means of translation is not only the need of spreading andpromoting national culture but also the must to colorize multiculturism, whichstimulates the author’s eagerness of the paper-writing.Xie hou yu, being the quintessence of Chinese language and culture, is widelyand pervasively utilized in common people’s daily life and men of letters’ works dueto its unique structure and intriguing meaning. Imaginative and humorous as it is, Xiehou yu can be enjoyed and appreciated by the highbrow and lowbrow alike.Accordingly, the studies concerning the translation of Xie hou yu, which are favoredby many scholars from the cognitive perspective to the linguistic angle and specifictranslation theories, are necessary and constructive. These research findings pave theway for the current paper-writing because of their presentations of the theoreticalframework and necessary database.This thesis will focus on the translation of Chinese Xie hou yu under theguidance of Equivalent Effect Theory. After the systematic explorations onEquivalent Effect Theory together with the detailed analysis of Chinese Xie hou yu, itis observed that the translation of Xie hou yu is possible, and some tentativetranslation strategies and methods guided by Equivalent Effect Theory are proposed. The thesis also discusses the implications and offers suggestions for furtherresearch.
