FangHui, who lived in late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty, was a well-known poet and .a critic of poetry. Learning from Du Fu, Huang Tingjian and Chen Shidao and Chen Yuyi, he advocated the theory of "One originator and three forebears", which was' widely accepted by later generations. Ftis famous works included eight-volume "Collection of Tong Jiang", thirty-six-volume "Continuation of Tong Jiang", forty-nine-volume "Ying Kui Lu Sui", four-volume "Selected Works of Yan Bao and Xie's Reviews on Poetry", thirty-seven-volume "Continuation of the Study on the Past and the Present". All of them have played an important role in the history of literature. Today, when making research on Fang Hui, people usually concentrate on his theory of poetic review while paying little attention to the rhymes in his poetry. Therefore, we take the rhymes in Fang Hui's poetry as the subject of our study, trying to inspect his phonetic system and provide materials for outlining the history of the development of phonetics during the Song Dynasty by thorough relating, induction and microanalysis. The dissertation mainly consists of the following aspects: Yin Sheng rhyme, Yang Sheng rhyme and Ru Sheng rhyme. This thesis is mainly divided into five parts. I. PrologueThis part includes a brief introduction to Fang Hui's autobiography, works and views on poetry, a simple account of the value on the study of phonetics through rhymes in poetry; and a confirmation of the volumes selected and the number of poems selected. n. Rhymes in modern style poemsBy a thorough relating and investigation of 2180 "modern style" poems written by Fang Hui, 14 categories of rhymes hi his poetry can be classified as follows: Ge Ge Category, Jia Ma Category, Jie Lai Category, Zhi Wei Category, Xiao Hao Category, You Hou Category, Yu Mu Category, Qin Xun Category, Zhen Wen Category, Geng Qing Category, Jian Lian Category, Han Shan Category, Jiang Yang Category and Dong Zhong Category. The first seven categories are Yin Sheng rhyme and the last seven Yang Sheng rhyme. The most obvious characteristic of poetic rhyme in "modern style" poetry is that there are a large number of borrowing rhymes and lending rhymes. Besides the borrowing and lending of rhymes within the same category, there's also mutual rhyming among various categories. The mutual rhyming mainly rise between Jia Ma Category and Jie Lai Category, Jie Lai Category and Zhi Wei Category, Zhi Wei Category and Yu Mu Category in Yin Sheng rhyme. As for Yang Sheng rhyme, it mainly involves the mixed rhyming of the end of rhymes such as -m, -n, and -rj and the belonging of Yuan rhyme. Through the analysis of "modern style" poetry of Fang Hui, we hold the idea that Yuan rhyme should be classified into Zhen Wen Category, which might be caused by the influence of poetic rhymes.Another important characteristic of poetic rhymes in Fang Hui's "modern style" poetry is its application of Jin Tui Case and the using of rhymes without borrowing, root, and lending. All the things mentioned can prove the flexibility of rhymes in "modern style" poetry from different aspects. III. Rhymes in classical poetryThere are 667 poems with 1040 syllables in classical poetry of Fang Hui. By relating the rhyming characters, all these rhymes can be classified into 18 categories, among which there are 14 categories of Shu Sheng rhyme, approximately similar to those in "modernstyle" poetry, and 4 categories of Ru Sheng rhyme, including Wu Zhu Category, Duo Jue Category, De Zhi Category and Yue Tie Category. The examples of exceptional rhymes in the categories of Yin Sheng in Fang Hui's poetry are mainly found in Jia Ma Category and Yu Mu Category; Jie Lai Category and Zhi Wei Category; Zhi Wei Category and Yu Mu Category; Yu Mu Category and You Hou Category. There are many types of mixed rhymes at the end of rhyming, such as -m, -n, and -rj in Yang Sheng rhyme, which involves 7 categories. This is the revelation of Fang Hui's dialect.
