Existing as a contrary of royal art, literary art and religious art in ancient time, folk art is a kind of practical and original art coming directly from the daily life of ordinary people with its products often made of the most common material without much improvements. Because of its originality and practicality, it has been looked down upon as crude art for thousands of years. This long-standing prejudice not only covers up the nature of art but also damages the vitality of art. Folk art has long been ignored, as a result, many excellent works perished and rich experience faded. With the wide spread of industrial products, folk art, just like handicraft, suffered a severe hit. Some works, even some forms of folk art ,are eliminated, seen as being obsolete. The uneven development of culture leads to this prejudice. Some people can easily inherite the cultural legacy because they have acquired book knowledge. While more people are almost illeterate, they can only learn from their senior generations or their peers. But it is those almost illeterate people who created folk art, for book knowledge is only a part of knowledge. Take a comprehensive view of human culture, it's easy to find that those illeterate people also have their own ways in passing on their art, though, these ways have their limitation. This can be proved in the old sayings about art. In them hide rich theory and practical skills.Beginning with an analysis of its practical value and aesthetic value, the author summarizes three ways of inheriting and developing folk art. With a clear understanding of its present situation, the author also points out thedirection for folk art:(1)continue to provide daily necessities in traditional way as a complement to industrial products,(2)become the object of aesthetic perception, and calls people's attention to the following important aspects: (1) carrying out a national investigation on its sources, (2)building the discipline of folk art, (3)raising the status of folk artist, (4)strengthening the publicity of folk art, as a reference for departments concerned to develop folk art.
