This paper studies the features and cultural connotation of the words in the group of "East,West,South and North" in Chinese.As the basic nouns of locality in Chinese, "East,West,South and North" have been greatly concerned by researchers,but by far there hasn' t been any complete study on the words in their group from the point of word meaning and direction culture as well.Based on the thought and approaches of elder researchers, This paper comprehensively studies the relationship between basic nouns of locality and traditional direction culture of our Chinese, fixed diachronic and synchronic study,quality and quantity,and struetural analysis with cultural explanations through this study.This paper also studies re from three aspects,it analyzes "East,West, South and North" andtraditional direction concept, features of words in the group of "East,West,South and North" ,and cultural connotation of "East,West,South and North" respectively.According to the above analysis,the author points out that the traditional Chinese concepts of "Respecting east and south" while "Despising west and north" resulted from the natural phenomenon of "sun-setting" and "sun rising" and the traditional habits of "preferring the warth to the coldness, facing the sun and against the shade" ;the structure of "East,West,South and North" strictly follow the rule of "Superior ones come first and inferior ones come next"The last chapter studies "shangzhong" to analyze the cultural conotation of Chinese nouns of localitymore comprehensively.
