With the use of aesthetic and narratologic methods, this thesis attempts to examine the cultural characteristics and the changes of narrative paradigm of Macao's novels in the 20* century in four sections: (1) the blooming period of Macao's novels in the 1930s and the outlook of its development, and the transition from the impacts of novels written by writers out of the peninsular to the local writers' responses to the local needs; (2) the change of the narrative paradigm in Macao's novels from solely realistic writing to the experiments in avant-garde writing and a deepening in realist writing as well; (3) an explorations in the saturation of the traditional Chinese culture by looking into the character images in Macao's novels, as well as the cultural characteristics of Macao's novels and "Macao's image" reflected in the novels; (4) the contemporary characteristics in Macao's novels during the transitional period.Being the first systematic analysis and holistic theoretical study carried out by local Macanese graduate student, this thesis holds an inaugural significance. With relatively large collection of quotes from original works and historical information that enables a more comprehensive review, this thesis also possesses the characteristics of historical commentary to the development of Macao's novels. Through the analysis and the evidences from literatures and historical information, "novels of social environment and everyday life" has been concluded from the discussed novels which embrace a strong sense of native country's consciousness, and the individuality of Macao's novels which has established Macao's novels vivid image has also been explored.
