This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part: There has always been a puzzle that whether language can fully express its meaning in the relationship between language and meaning for a long time. However, that is a contradiction between different signified. From the point of view of language, it can be classified into langue and parole. Langue aregrammatical rule and lexical system for people to obey and parole is concretetapplication, when individual communicates views. Different requirements to meaning are required in langue and parole. Cause the destination of whether fully expression its meaning or not by language. According to Chinese traditional culture in philosophy, Confucianism pays more attention to language than meaning, Taoism and Zionism emphasize meaning that language. So the former argues that language can fully expression its meaning, but the latter holds that the opposite view. From the point of view of meaning ,it can be classified into the literal meaning and the meaning between the lines that are merged in poetic theory in which the former should fully express reason, the latter fully express image. The mergence of reason and perception lies in concrete imagery. Certainly, people always make every effort to express the meaning, between the lines in the concrete artistic creation . As it always goes ,the meaning is implied .The second part :The key to solve the contradiction that language can not fully express its meaning is introduction of the concept "Image", So ,this thesis first etymologizes "Image", than observe and study its later development in meaning :from original meaning "elephant" to divinatory symbols, than to imagination ,to Image. The expressive way of "setting up Image to fully express meaning "proposed in Xici in the Book of charges regarded Image as intermedium to express mankind's subjective emotion ,express to the world andunderstanding to the universe. So ,this thesis expounds the relationship between "Image" and "Tao", mainly from the point of view of Lao zi and Zhuang zi to explore historical certainty that Image combines with meaning .Lao zi called "Tao" "the shape without shape as well as the image without substance". That is "vague and indefinite ,it presents images; Indefinite and vague, it embodies substance". "The great sound seems soundless ,the great Image seems formless" is realization of noumenon of "Tao". However ,Zhuang zi understood Tao through "xiangwang" and put forward "Sounds of nature", "sounds of the earth", "sounds of mankind ".That establishes a essential semantic foundation for the combination of meaning and Image for later generations .The third part: "Imagery" that is combination of meaning and symbol for the first time appeared in Luan Long in Lun Heng written by Wang chong who proposed "rite focuses on imagery "in the East Han dynasty .The relationship between meaning and image in philosophy is proposed in Xici in the Book of Changes", than developed by zhuang zi and Wang bi .Imagery in aesthetic filled was established on basis of philosophy by Zhi yu and Liu xie .who for the first time regard images as the product of aesthetic creation that was seen as "peeping imagery to create". Thus, Imagery came into being historically. Latter on ,aesthetic imagery has possessed unique aesthetic characteristics ,that is ,pursuing implied meaning and mergence of affection and scene by the way of "Fu" "Be" "Xing" .Imagery's vigor and vitality have been showed through ancient imagery criticism and construction of imagery nowadays. Rethinking of Imagery that is key category of Chinese ancient theory and aesthetics is significant and valuable.â– END-END Keywords:language, meaning, image, aesthetic imagery, aesthetic characteristics .
