At present, China' urban construction has entered a new stage of rapid development. Public art is the important part of modern city image, which is closely connected with the construction of social material and spiritual civilization. Moreover, it can promote high-quality environment of sustainable developing modern city, pass on public emotional ideas, and share aesthetic resources. This paper is based on the present conditions of sculptures, outdoor ads and murals, discussing profound problems, reasons and strategies. Public art serves the public, to improve living standard, optimize life style, perfect environmental quality, elevate cultural taste and atmosphere, and emphasize city public art and dwellers. Then, the author tries to put forward the theory that public art can ease negative effects caused by buildings, and enhance environmental protection, in order to achieve the harmony among people, surroundings, nature and society. Most importantly, it probes into the concepts of Today's City Public Art (TCPA) and present problems, therefore, refraining from any same features, overcoming the shortages of personality and historical cultural characteristics, offering useful guiding principles for creating city image.In this thesis, the author starts from his own knowledge of sculptures, outdoor ads, and murals with his own experiences over years, and analyzes problems and strategies of TCPA. To be specific, it contains three parts. The first part is devoted to limiting the concept of public art, pointing out its research purposes and significance, and exploring its types, features and design principles. The second part develops the present problems of today's city sculptures, outdoor ads, murals, and examines them. The last part provides an overview of strategies on today's city sculptures, outdoor ads and murals, respectively. From a sculptural aspect, this paper stresses design concepts, communications between public art and urban environment, probing into recognition of cultural spirit and development of sculptures. From an outdoor ads perspective, it focuses on installation and planning, getting on well with urban environment, and advocating the way to deal with visual transmission and professional management. Form a mural viewpoint, it warns painters against going astray. That is, painters should create different murals according to different requirements, pay attention to the usage of material language, the mural's effects in urban environment, and the creativeness of manifestation.According to the principle of dialectical materialism, this paper explores the ascending development of TCPA from multi-dimensional view, such as city environmental aesthetics, geography and art. Using the theories of environmental building and art design as grounds, it finds out practicability of sustainable development. Besides, it adopts pluralistic and comparative measures among nature, society, science and art, in order to discover the laws of solving TCPA' s problems.As a developing novel topic, TCPA' s pluralistic development relates to a wide range of disciplines. It is vigorous but difficult, so more efforts should be made, from now on.
