| Ge Hong, styled zhi chuan and was named Pao Puzi .He was one of the great thinkers in East Jin Dynasty and contributed much in literature field.Study about him in the past always lied in the respects of philosophy , religion and medicine.Although some research work has been made in field of literature and arts , people ofen lay emphases on literature theory instead of further study about his works.This eassay analyses Pao Puzi Unofficial Chapters thoroughly in Ge Hong's thoughts, the relationship between aesthetics, literature thoughts and philosophy, relationship between Ge Hong' s literature thoughts and preceding dynasty, the literature features of Bao Puzi Unofficial Chapters as well as its causes, influence of Ge Hong's thoughts on later generations and Ge Hong's comment on literature history. Therefore, we may acknowledge the progress of both his literature thoughts and its effects on his creation, from which we may explain the theory of his works and then master and evalue the arts features of Pao Puzi Unofficial chapters.The question of his life span is controversy.It was said that his age was less than sixty, sixty-one,sixty-three or sixty-five,or eighty-one.I think sixty-one is believable, that is, he was born in 283 and died in 343.His life experienced the destruction of West Jin Dynasty, chaos in the war, fighting in the worth and flourishing of East Jin Dynasty, which had great influcence on Ge Hong's outlook on life, his thoughts and works.Just like Lu Ji, Ge Hong embraced the worship for fathers. The death of Lu Ji and Lu Yun influenced directly and further his life and aspiration to write books. Ge Hong's character, influenced by Wang Chong and Lu Ji were typical in hard working and resistance to the society.Ge Hong was productive in his works.Besides the book of on Ge Hong, there are about 700 volumes of poems,fu, tablet inscription odes and biography. Ge Hong can be called a great master in East and West Jin Dynasty for the number, types and value of his works.Besides confucius, he had also the thoughts of Taoism, Legalists, Monism, Criminal school and Chinese philosophy Yin and Yang, which made his thoughts were complicated .The book of Pao Puzi Unofficial Chapters has substantial content, consisting of failure and success in life as well as evaluation of social affairs. It reflects completely Ge Hong' s philosophy, politics, legality, life principles and arts thoughts of aesthetics and literature that present society is superior to that in the past.Ge Hong' s literature thoughts has its origin. The Three Metaphysical ideas(The book of changes, The Book of Master Zhuang and The Book of Master Lao) gaves him thoughts way of dialectical materist. The Books of Master Xun Kuang and Master Han Fei gaves him thoughts ofevoluation. In the proceeding dynasty, Wang Chong, Cao Pi and Lu Ji had great influence on him, but Ge Hong treated with both criticism and inheritance.Pao Puzi Unofficial Chapters can be analyzed in two respects.One is in system of structure, reasoning and style, the other is in art of parrallelism in which there appears features and techniques in words choosing, allusion and rhymes. The reasons why this book has these features lie in two respects:objective social and official custom and subjective reading more and thinking a lot.This article discuses a lot about the latter.Ge Hong' s aesthetics, literature thoughts and works had much influence on later generations of literature theory and criticism about aesthetics, and writers' creation, such as Liu Xie, Yan Zhitui, Xiao Yi to the former and Li Bai, Du Fu and Su Shi to the latter.
